Barry Farm community

The Barry Farm neighborhood is located east of the Anacostia River in Ward 8, bounded by Firth Sterling Avenue on the west, Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue on the east, St. Elizabeth’s West Campus on the south and Suitland Parkway on the north.

Barry Farm is a historic landmark. Barry Farm’s land was part of a farm owned by James Barry in the mid-19th Century. In 1867, the Freedman’s Bureau purchased the land from the Barry family and parceled it out as settlements for freed slaves.

Goodman League Barry Farm

Barry Farm is home to The Goodman League, named after community activist George Goodman. The League features current and former NBA players, college players, and participants from various communities. The league has been around since the mid-1970s and is recognized nationally.

Barry Farm recreation center under construction

The redevelopment of the Barry Farm neighborhood includes a new, state-of-the-art, recreation center that is currently under construction. Features will include an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, basketball courts, community rooms and parking garage.

Today, Barry Farm consists of 432 units of public housing. When revitalized, there will be in excess of 1,000 units and all public housing units will be replaced within the community.

Barry Farm is a neighborhood located east of the Anacostia River in southeast Washington, DC. Today, Barry Farm consists of 432 public housing units. As part of the New Communities Initiative, Barry Farm will be redeveloped into a mixed-use, mixed-income community.
