About the Park Morton Neighborhood
The Park Morton is located in Ward 1, just five blocks south of the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro Station. The neighborhood is bounded by the 3100 to 3500 blocks of Georgia Avenue on the west, Warder Street on the east, Lamont Street on the south and Park Road on the north.
The Park Morton neighborhood was built in 1960 and is made up of 17 garden-style buildings with 174 walk-up units, all of which are two-bedroom units. Park Morton is approximately 165,000 square feet or 2.72 acres. The DC Housing Authority owns and manages the apartment complex.
Park Morton is a part of the larger Park View neighborhood which is bounded by Park Road, New Hampshire Avenue, and Georgia Avenue. Reflecting social changes occurring throughout the District, the Park View neighborhood began to desegregate in the 1940s when African-American families began to move into the neighborhood. Today, the neighborhood is racially diverse.
Georgia Avenue is the commercial artery of the Park Morton neighborhood. The Georgia Avenue corridor is part of the District’s Great Streets Initiative, a multi-year, multi-agency commercial revitalization initiative to transform emerging corridors across the District into thriving and inviting neighborhood centers. The Great Streets Initiative provides the opportunity for business owners to apply for up to $85,000 in reimbursable grants for the purpose of capital expenditures.
